Character information
Name: Annie Cresta
Age: 21
Date of Birth: March 21
Canon: The Hunger Games
Species: Human, Hunter
Role: While Annie no longer actively hunts due to previous experiences, she's curious about the supernatural world. She wants to learn, and she wants to help. However, she's viewed as a sort of pariah amongst many hunters due to her odd nature and her trauma that forever changed her. Even amongst those of Hillingdon, she's still viewed as 'mad'. Bright and eager, Annie doesn't want to be left out, and knows there have to be others like her, that have been so altered by their experiences with the underground community.
That being said, she also wants to be left alone, and to try to heal herself. She misses her previous life, by the sea-side, but there's no going back. There's only going forward, even if she seems so trapped within her past.
Rank: Level 1
Background: (cw: violence, suicide) Born and raised on the island of Inishmaan, Ireland, the middle island of the Aran Islands, Annie Cresta was raised by her father and her grandmother. Her mother was killed by a vampire, causing her father to retire, and focus on raising his infant daughter. When Annie was about 12, she learned the real reason her mother had passed away and began to interrogate her grandma and dad about their lives when she was younger.
Annie's mother had been killed trying to protect her. A vampire had spotted the young family, and had a weakness for the blood of infants. He waited for the opportune moment and went for the baby. Annie's mother had seen him at the last second, and went to attack, while Annie's father went for his daughter. In the fight, he was wounded, and his wife bled out after inflicting a fatal wound on the vampire.
Annie was fascinated and horrified all at the same time. But she felt that she owed her mother. She wanted to make her proud, to be as brave as her mother. At the time, she didn't understand what it was to kill, how hard it was, and how life-altering becoming a hunter was, and saw it as an opportunity to feel close to her mother. It took some time, but eventually, her father reluctantly agreed to let her enroll in The Fourth District, a vampire hunting academy, when she was 14, but only under the caveat that he join her as a faculty member.
When Annie was seventeen, she was one of the top students at District 4, as everyone called it. With thoughts of her mother, she excelled in every course, working herself to the point of exhaustion, all in the name of her mother's memory. Annie was sure to be a hunter with a bright future, everyone agreed. However, so did many students, and that didn't escape the notice of some vampires. One night, somehow they managed to get past the defenses, and an entire nest descended on the school.
It was. a massacre. Students were drained in their beds, spines were snapped, and most people only woke up after too much damage had been done. But they did what any person at a vampire hunting academy would do. They picked up their stakes and started staking. Annie and her roommate began to hunt together, taking out a few vampires of their own. Until they were attacked from behind. Rather than take the time to drain, the vampire attacker tore her roommate's head straight off, showering Annie in her blood. Something switched in Annie, and she took the vampire down.
The rest of the attack was lost to Annie. Covered in blood and panicking, Annie found herself in a fugue state, unaware of her actions, completely on auto-pilot. All she remembers is waking up some time later in a hospital, a bandage around her neck, and her somber grandmother by her side. As it was revealed to her later, she had hidden for as long as she could, before she was found by a vampire. The vampire started to feed on her, latching on to her neck, and was sure to drain her dry. Luckily, the cavalry arrived just in time. Word had reached the Night Council thanks to some enterprising students and faculty who had sounded the alarm before they were killed, and the Night Council had managed to contact some hunters in the area unassociated with the school. The hunters got to the school as fast as they could, but it was too late. Nearly everyone was dead, or dying, and Annie would have joined them if not for the hunter that saved her life by staking her attacker.
He saved her life, and as the only survivor of the massacre, Annie still wishes that he had let her die.
Annie spent some time recovering in the hospital. She was nearly comatose, refusing to speak, eat. When she did speak, it was in shorter, child-like sentences. Loud noises sent her cowering, and she would stare into space for hours, dissociative episodes that she would later call 'going away'. She was mad, by all accounts, and she knew it.
What was worse was she could remember before. She could remember how normal she used to be, how she would never be again. With a knife, she tried to end her life. her grandmother found her, however, and acted quickly, saving her life. By then, however, it was clear that Annie needed to get out of Ireland.
Now, 21-years-old, Annie still lives with her wealthy grandmother in a large flat in Hillingdon in London. Though she doesn't participate in hunting, she's working hard to try to regain some semblance of her old life. She's made progress, but she still has so much work ahead of her.
Personality: In order to understand Annie Cresta, it is important to understand how she used to be, before she went, as many are quick to say, crazy. The parts of her that have been lost and mourned in favor of this new, altered girl who's seen terrible things.
Annie has always been a shy girl, timid, prefering only to speak up when she finds something wrong. This changes, however, when she gets to know a person. If she is close with them enough to consider them friends (which tends to be most people who give her the time of day) she will happily start conversation first.
Once the ice has been broken, Annie is an incredibly kind, loving soul. Annie unabashedly loves people. If someone is having a bad day, and she will take a seat next to them, hold their hand, ask them what's going on. When she loves someone, she loves with her whole heart. To her, friendship is an all or nothing sort of thing. Unfortunately, many people do not seem to share this belief with her, and as such, she is often hurt.
For a while after the massacre, she found herself regressing back by a number of years to a child-like state. She refused to speak for weeks. Slowly but surely, she began to speak again, though her speech pattern was altered, leaving out connecting words or personal pronouns. Her sentences were short fragments, or put together extremely simply. Now, when she is stressed or under the influence of a strong emotion, these tendencies tend to return: Annie will once again speak in shorter sentences, resuming a childlike role.
Annie has always been a little off-kilter when compared to those around her. As a child, Annie had a temper- when frustrated, she would take out her anger on herself. As she grew older, it was assumed she grew out of this, when she only began to hide this. A perfectionist, when Annie found herself subpar in any way, she'd find a way to punish herself, most often by refusing to let herself eat, or by self-harm. Her strict rules for herself allowed her to excel at District 4, in addition to her drive. She's a very driven woman, and refuses to let anything stand in her way. When she has a goal, she gets tunnel vision and focuses only on that. For her, it was living up to her mother's legacy and making her proud.
Another issue that managed to plague Annie is her disassociation. After the massacre, Annie began to disassociate, unaware of anything going on around her. She called this going away, and the term has stuck. She hates it, fearing that it makes her look stupid or crazy, and the lack of control she has over her actions. During these moments, she blacks out, unable to remember what she's doing. It's terrifying, and she knows just how much trouble such a problem brings.
With the disassociation came a faltering grip on reality. In an attempt to make up for the bits and pieces she had forgotten when she'd blacked out, her mind began to create fantasies- the doctors at the hospital she was taken to diagnosed it as psychosis. Her mind gets attached to ideas and will not let them go.
When Annie is upset, her tactile side finds comfort in her hair. It's a habit she's always had, playing with it. When she begins to worry at the ends, her hands slowly inching up her hair, it's a red flag that something is not right and Annie is going to have some sort of fit. During these fits, she tends to disassociate, or even regress. When she regresses, she becomes violent, her emotions volatile. She has very little control over her emotions even when she's at her peak, but during these times, she's powerless.
When Annie is crossed, she is capable of forgetting her shyness, and will lash out with a terrifying temper. Even if she avoids using violence, her words can cause quite a bit of damage. Such occasions are rare, but when they do occur, they are one for the books. When people try to hurt her, or she finds herself up against the wall, she will push people as far away as she can with her words.
It's this temper that shows up when she's out hunting. As a grown woman, she sees vampires, and fears them. But she also knows how much they took away from her, and she seeks revenge now, not just for her mother, but for her classmates, her father, and for herself. The vampires took away so much from her, and she will not let them get away with it. She knows this, and uses it as a motivating factor whenever she encounters one on her terms.
Annie has, over her 21 years, collected all manner of hobbies. She's an accomplished pianist and was learning to play the harp before her family died. Given her tactile nature, she loves to work with her hands, be it cooking, or knitting. She's a voracious reader, prefering the company of books most days.
Having been a SCUBA diver and spending a lot of time out on her father's boat growing up, she's an incredibly strong swimmer, and finds a lot of comfort in the water. It's calming, soothing, and it's home. She'd always been drawn to it, and Annie spent her extra time volunteering at the local pool to help children learn to swim, before she left Inishmaan. She holds water in the highest respect possible.
Annie hates to be called crazy, insane, or anything like that, and if you do, she will have no problem telling you not to call her that. The only person who can call her crazy is herself. Because when she says it, it's true. When anyone else says it, they don't know what they're talking about. She fears that she truly is insane, and will never get better. She's plagued by night terrors of the massacre, even four years later.
Though generally reduced to being simply Crazy Annie Cresta, Annie works hard to get people to recognize her as something more, as the girl she used to be before the massacre. London offers a reprise for her, a second chance. She may no longer be the first person to jump into the ring armed with steaks, but she'll still be there if anyone needs her. No matter what they think of her.
Powers & Possessions: Annie Cresta is a highly skilled vampire hunter. She's methodical and tight in regards to how she fights, so long as her mind as still there. If she disassociates and blacks out, as she tends to do in overwhelming situations now, she becomes brutal and careless. Regardless of her state, she's very observant, and quick to think on her feet. Resourceful, was what they called her at District 4.
She's also an incredibly talented SCUBA diver and knows her way around a boat, having grown up in a fishing town. She's an outstanding swimmer, additionally.
She still owns a vampire hunting kit (silver bullets, cross, salt, lots of stakes, iron and the like), and does not go anywhere without some means of vampire protection. She has a witches amulet (one her mother was gifted some time ago) that she never takes off, either, as means of protection.
Additionally, Annie has a pair of silver and iron woven bracelets that she keeps on nearly all the time. This is the same braided chain that her amulet is made of.
