CHARACTER

NAME: Annie Cresta
AGE: 21
CANON: The Hunger Games
CANON TYPE: Books

BACKGROUND: Not much is known about Annie Cresta. She was selected as the female tribute for District 4 in the 70th Hunger Games. The Games did not kill Annie, but rather, drove her into madness after she watched her district partner get decapitated by an axe. Annie hid for the next few days, living alone, terrified, and by all accounts, insane. After an earthquake broke the dam, flooding the arena, Annie survived primarily because she was a stronger swimmer than all the other tributes. But don't let that fool you, there is blood on her hands.

After her Games, Annie fell in love with fellow Victor, and her mentor, Finnick Odair. She stayed with him despite his forced prostitution in the capitol, and they lived together for five years. When the Quarter Quell was announced, Annie's name was selected for the reaping once again. Falling to her knees, Annie was unable to even move towards the stage before Mags, Finnick's mentor and Annie's friend volunteered in her place saving her from what would have been certain death. Finnick, unfortunately, was also reaped.

Shortly after the reaping, Annie was taken by the Capitol, where she was tortured for information until she was rescued by the resistance. Flying to district 13, she was reunited with Finnick, the love of her life, at long last.

CANON POINT: Right before she was rescued from the Capitol.

WORLD INFORMATION: Panem is the North America of the future. After war ravaged the world, Panem formed, and consists of 12 Districts (District 13 was thought to be destroyed in a rebellion). While the people of the Districts live in varying degrees of poverty, 1 being the most well-off and 12 being the worst, those that are lucky enough to live in the Capitol flourish.

After the rebellion of the districts in which District 13 was destroyed, the Hunger Games was created. Every year, a boy and a girl between the ages of 12 and 18 from each district are selected to fight in an arena for honor and glory. That is to say, to the death.

PERSONALITY: Annie Cresta is known to all of Panem as the Mad Victor. Another popular nickname is Crazy Annie Cresta. As the result of the pressure of the Games and witnessing her friend and district partner get beheaded, Annie, as they say, went mad. Now, most people, frightened by her oddities, keep her at an arm's distance, or ignore her completely. People like to forget about the mad girl. But she is far more than her madness.

Annie, to those who get to know her, is incredibly kind. She's surprisingly patient, though she has her moments of great impatience, and considers everyone that takes time out of their day to speak with her a friend. She has very few real friends, so she treasures those that do get close to her. She loves freely and willingly, because despite the horrors she's been put through, and committed, she has nothing in her heart to give but love.

As a result of her descent into madness, Annie is very child-like. She's extremely tactile, and loves to speak with people. At the same time, she's shy, never the first one to speak to a new person, she prefers to let them meet her, first, afraid that she'll scare them off. Annie takes great joy in cuddling, holding hands, and kissing. She has trouble with her words, and as a result, is best at expressing herself physically, most often through hugs if she likes someone. She's naturally curious, something that more often then not, gets her into trouble. She likes to learn, loves to understand, and really feel that she's part of the world around her that she feels so isolated from.

One of the many things that's off-putting about Annie is her strange speech patterns. She tends to speak in fragments, and is prone to leave out words here and there. She hardly ever uses the word 'I', so, for example, instead of saying "I don't want that," she'd shorten it to "Don't want that" or even "Don't want." When she does manage a full sentence, it's generally very simply. Then, on the other hand, you have her occasionally going off into long, run-on sentences that often have no end in sight. Sometimes, she peppers her speech with a surprisingly big word. It's a little jarring, considering her child-like ways.

Annie tends to be very mercurial as well. One moment, she'll be completely fine, giggling about some long-forgotten memory, and the next, her eyes will go wide and her hands will find their way into her hair and she'll be sobbing about a crime she didn't commit but has convinced herself she has. One never knows how she'll react to anything, and she is a slave to her emotions. She has no choice but to feel them completely and totally.

When things get bad, when she gets bogged down in bad thoughts, or something triggers her, Annie tends to disassociate. She calls this "going away" and hates it on principal. During these episodes, she most often simply sits in the corner, quietly, only making the occasional sound when her thoughts get too dark for her. She also becomes increasingly violent, which is something most people do not associate with her. But, she is a victor, a trained killer. She knows what she's doing, and there's a reason she's no longer allowed around knives.

When Annie is frustrated, she tends to take things out on herself. She believes it's her fault that she's not smart enough to understand people or things, or that she's causing people such great stress. She has no regard for her personal welfare, and often times this frustration is taken out physically on her. The idea that something could be dangerous to her is a very far off idea, and she's gotten more than her fair share of injuries due to this accidental form of self-harm.

Annie has a very faint grasp on reality. Often times, she will make up events that have happened, or wake up from a nightmare unsure of where she is. Whenever she's concerned about if something is part of reality, or if it's in her own head, such as hallucinations and the like, she and Finnick will play a game. It's a very simple one, called Real or Not Real, which consists of her stating a fact and asking if it's real or not real. The second person playing will tell her, and she'll take some time to adjust to this fact.

Highly-observational, Annie, for her lack of comprehension of the world, is surprisingly wise. She tries to see the good in people, and in doing so, tends to have a better view on things than a lot of people. Though her advice, if you ask for it, may come out strange, sprinkled with references to things you may not understand, it tends to be on the good side. She really just wants everyone to be happy, even at the cost of her own happiness.

For all her love, there are a few things Annie hates. She hates to be ignored, and will often get extremely frustrated, to the point of throwing a small tantrum and refusing to speak. She also hates to be called crazy. She knows she is, but she doesn't like other people to say it. And most importantly, Annie hates to be treated like a child. She is 21. She hasn't been a child since they called her name at the reaping 5 years ago, and just because she's not as sane as everyone else, does not mean that they get to treat her like she is less-than-them. She treats herself that way enough as it is.

CONDITIONAL - SUMMARY OF PREVIOUS RP DEVELOPMENT: None! I have a good dosage of head canon about her Games, but that's different.

POWERS / ABILITIES: Annie won her Hunger Games by swimming. Suffice to say, she's one hell of a swimmer. When she feels like bragging, which is very rare, she'll say she's the best swimmer in Panem, which is probably pretty likely.

District 4 is a career district. This means that up until she was selected for the reaping at the age of 16, Annie, along with the other children in her district, was trained for the Games. They didn't train as hard as the other districts, and it was part of their normal school curriculum. Annie's skilled with a knife, and in hand-to-hand combat. She's strong, for her height, and quite fast. She also has the basic survival skills one would need to survive the arena.

In addition to being a career district, District 4 is also the fishing district. She knows CPR, how to rescue someone from drowning, how to fish, tie knots, and drive a boat.

SAMPLES

FIRST PERSON: [A young woman with wild, dark hair is curled up in the corner of what appears to be a dark alley-way. Her sea-green eyes are wild and manic as she looks around, unaware of the camera.] Help. Don't know where I am. Not home. Where's home? Took me from home, into the dark, with the red water and they brought me back and I'm here. This isn't home. Not even Panem. Want to go home! [She sobs openly, her hands in her hair.] Want to be home. Want to be safe. Want Finnick. Where's-- no.

[Her eyes go wide and she looks around.] No. Can't be back here. Can't. Different. Already won, they can't call my name again. No. Called my name again, but I didn't go. Can't be back-- no! [One hand removes itself from her hair to start looking around for something, anything that can be a weapon.]

THIRD PERSON: Annie Cresta was lost. One could argue she's always lost, mentally, but this time, it's physically, too. This place isn't Panem, not District 4, not the Capitol, not anything. Yes, it could be the Capitol, with all it's buildings, and the signs and the cars, but it's not. She knows the Capitol. And people talk funny here.

"Lost, gotta walk, gotta find water. Water helps," she said to no one in particular. It was a familiar refrain to her, left over from her Games. Slowly, she raised her left hand and began to play with the long ends of her brown hair. "Cold, too." A few people she passed looked up in time to give her a strange look. Uttering a small noise, she shrunk back from their glances, hunching her shoulders forward. She should be used to the stares by now. She gets-- got-- them all the time in District 4. The way people would look at her and whisper. Because that's what she needed. More attention brought to her madness. When all she wanted to do was pick up a few things for breakfast the next morning.

"Miss breakfast," she mutters. It's easier if she talks to herself, she learned a long time ago. Too much silence means she's alone with her thoughts, and that tends to leave her in a dark, dark place. Besides, the silence is terrifying. "Miss making breakfast, eating it, miss Finnick. Miss making him breakfast. I want-- want to go home!" Her voice chose that moment to crack right there on the middle of the street, and ignoring all the look, she sits down on the nearest bench, pulling her feet up to her chest and beginning to sob. It was all supposed to be over. She was supposed to be safe. That's what they said when they took her from the Capitol. Now she was in a new place, and, once more, Annie Cresta found herself completely alone.

ADDITIONAL NOTES: A weird place to take her from, but hey, should be fun.
